Another day filled with ruins. We started out in Didyma, where there is a fantastic Temple to Apollo (behind Rach on the home page) which housed an Oracle that rivaled Delphi. The site was protected by Medusa and surrounded by 120 columns – a few are still standing, but most toppled over long ago. Our book called this “one of the world’s most impressive religious structures,” and we definitely agree. As we moved up the coast, we passed through Priene, which was a major Greek city before the ocean receded and left it in the middle of vast farmlands. Finally, we made it to Efes (Ephesus) which is one of the best-preserved Roman cities in the world. It was enormous, with more than 250,000 people living there at one time. The column-lined streets still bustle with activity. The Library of Celsus held 12,000 scroll-books, and more than 25,000 spectators could fill the Great Theater. The whole place was simply incredible, and gave a real feel for how these Romans lived their lives.
